ADMISSIONS

WHO MAY APPLY TO THE BERKSHIRE INSTITUTE FOR CHRISTIAN STUDIES?

The Berkshire Institute for Christian Studies educates students who confess Jesus Christ as Savior and who plan to serve Him in the Church and in the community, whatever their vocations. The Institute is intended for those who desire a quality, Christian education on the college level that presents a biblical world view and that offers direction for spiritual growth. Each applicant must have earned a high school diploma or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED).

NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY

In keeping with biblical ethics, BICS is committed to the policy of nondiscrimination on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, sex, age, or physical handicap. This policy pertains to application and selection for admission as well as for employment and all other personnel actions. This is in compliance with the Title VII, Civil Rights Act of 1964; Title IX, Education Amendments of 1972, and Section 504 Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and regulations promulgated thereunder, 34 C.F.R. Part 100 (Title VI), Part 106A (Title IX), and Part 104 (Section 504).

WHAT ARE THE ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS?

The Institute requires for admission that a student meet at least two of the following academic criteria:
1. A minimum grade point average of 2.6 (based on a 4.0 system)
2. A ranking in the upper 40th percentile of the high school graduating class
3. A combined average of at least 1000 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), or 20 on the American College Test (ACT)

WHAT ABOUT NOT QUITE MEETING THE REQUIREMENTS?

In cases where individuals do not quite meet the stated admission standards, the Administration may find justification in a student's record for granting provisional acceptance. As a result, limitations may be placed on the student's academic load and extracurricular activities.

WHAT ABOUT STUDENTS WHO HAVE ALREADY COMPLETED COLLEGE?

Those who have already completed college or have attended professional schools should submit transcripts from them in addition to their high school transcripts. Otherwise, the admission procedure is the same.

DOES BICS OFFER FINANCIAL AID?

BICS is committed to an ideal of debt-free education for its students. Student loans merely postpone the debt. Thus the Institute has designed a program that is low-cost to begin with, and also offers assistance in personal fund raising, procurement of employment, and housing.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO GO TO BICS?

Annual cost estimates are as follows:
Tuition for one year, including travel & books
$ 6,750
Room
$ 1,870
Meals (self-prepared--estimated)
$ 1,200
Other costs (besides personal needs):

   Passport (valid for 10 years)

$ 85

   Application Fee

$ 25

   Orientation Fee

$ 145

Room and board may be earned through local employment at a minimum rate of $6.00 per hour for a maximum of 20 hours per week. (BICS students should normally earn $6.50 or more per hour.) The Institute will normally discourage weekend employment since part of the curriculum will involve weekend ministries. Of course, one may augment his or her costs for tuition and room and board with personal savings and/or help from one's parents.
